BEYOND THE MARGINS:

BEYOND THE MARGINS:

UNDERREPRESENTED VOICES

Given the combative rhetoric in our current political climate, what voices are being heard or legitimized in our culture? What is the role of socially engaged art in this larger dialogue? What forms does this artwork take and how does it recognize divisions, or build bridges, or provide a voice for the underrepresented? This year’s New England Graduate Media Symposium will focus on socially engaged art practice across multiple media forms, with an emphasis on ways it can provide a platform for the representation of voices and experiences not being recognized by dominant media.

WITH KEYNOTE SPEAKER: RAMIN BAHRANI

This year’s keynote speaker will be Ramin Bahrani, a movie writer/ director, Guggenheim recipient, and Independent Spirit Award winner. His films have screened in many festivals including Sundance, Cannes, and Tribeca and have twice been nominated for the Golden Lion. Roger Ebert listed his third feature, Chop Shop, as the 6th best film of the 2000’s, while calling Bahrani “the director of the decade.” HBO will be releasing his newest film, an adaptation of Fahrenheit 451, starring Michael B. Jordan and Michael Shannon.

Bahrani's films have often represented characters who have been marginalized due to their social class and ethnic backgrounds. They examine the reasons why people are either given opportunity or not, and the ways society perpetuates positions of privilege. We're excited to have Bahrani's voice contribute to the discussion of these issues at this year's Symposium.
